Northcoast Children's Services

 

Northcoast Children’s Services is a private non-profit corporation, which has provided educational, family, and recreational services and opportunities to children and adults of Humboldt and Del Norte County for thirty years.

NCS currently administers Head Start, Early Head Start, California Child Development Centers, State Preschool programs, Child Abuse Prevention and Intervention, Child Care Food Service, Humboldt Recreation Program, Even Start, Reading is Fundamental, Car Seat distribution and other programs. Northcoast Children’s Services currently employs 250 people and provides services in 33 separate locations in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The total operating budget of NCS is 9.8 million dollars.

Northcoast Children’s Services is the largest provider of comprehensive direct services to children from birth to age five and their families on the Northcoast. Approximately 1,200 children and their families receive services through NCS each year.

Northcoast Children’s Services has over 75 active partnerships, which work to provide seamless collaborative services to low-income pregnant women, children from birth to age five and their families. These partnerships include College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University, local and county school districts, county and State human service agencies and commissions, local hospitals and medical facilities, and local non-profit and private agencies and providers

Northcoast Children’s Services believes that healthy families are crucial to the development that occurs from the beginning of life through early childhood. Respectfully building on each family’s strengths and goals, Northcoast Children’s Services works in partnership with children, families and communities to promote and advocate for healthy development.

Northcoast Children’s Services programs are comprehensive and integrated. These services include early childhood education, child and adult mental health services, extensive family services including adult education, social services, provision of basic needs, health, dental and nutritional services, case management, resource and referral, family literacy and parent involvement.

NCS maintains high quality services through an extensive annual self assessment process and ongoing monitoring leading to a continuous improvement process. Input is gathered from community advisory groups and parent and staff focus groups. Reports are generated periodically to follow up on child, family, and staff needs. Reports range from family goal setting to child educational outcomes, physical, dental and mental health, to training provided staff directly related to their performance of essential competencies Federal and Start review teams regularly visit the program to insure full compliance with all Federal and State standards, funding conditions, and codes.
